The Purpose of Music Videos
There are many reasons why there is a purpose of a music video, and this can be explored with depth through each reasons. Everyone has different understandings and reasons on the types of purposes within a music video but I personally am going to describe and explain the basic obvious ones which include;
v Selling the song itself.
v The exposure and expansion of an artist
v To tell the story of the song, (if the sing is narrative)
v The entertainment for the viewers
The main overall reasons for the purposes of music videos are marketing, promotional and artistic reasons. A music video itself is there to try and create a reaction out of the viewer’s, which will help them to remember the artist or the song. This is helping sell the song helping gain profit from it. Its also an extension for the artist of income. The PRS (performing rights society) is an organisation which will collect royalties from the radio stations, music videos which are shown and shops which sell the merchandise as such. Everything something is bought, shown or played, then the PRS will collect money for the artist. As videos are concerned, this will all depend on the song and video itself. Artists will try their best to try and make the video entertaining for the viewer, so they like the song and enjoy watching the video as if it was boring then people wouldn’t be very interested in it. However, there is can always be a downside to creating a music video. For example, if an artist did a sound track for a film or a single song, and that particular film wasn’t very good and it became a ‘flop’ and the music video had clips of the film within it, that music video may not be as popular as people thought meaning the artist would lose out on profit. Thinking carefully and specifically on what the audience like and thinking about the target audience is also another priority that the artists must take in to succeed with music videos. The majority of younger people are more willing to sit and watch music videos either on YouTube or on the TV, so that means making videos which the audience will remember as word of mouth is also another way that the audience will get exposure. If someone sees a video in with a certain artist of a song that they enjoy they will go and tell their friends to view the video which will expose the artist to more people and expand their fan base and also the money they will get from the PRS.
